Description

The most popular sports magazine of the last sixty years is Sports Illustrated. Covering the great wide world of sports, this long-running publication keeps devoted readers coming back for more with timely articles, gripping photography and an enticing annual “swimsuit” edition. H&S is pleased to offer the spectacular Wyllie collection of graded SI magazines (all newsstand editions without address labels). Certainly one of the finest certified SI accumulations known, this well-heeled collection is being offered in our current auction in (36) individual lots, that include all (4) of the 1954-1955 issues with baseball card inserts, as well as many other key issues that rank among the most sought after in the SI run, such as major star athlete appearances, known rarities, highest graded examples and a good number of specimens form the “Dark Print Era”. Please see our Multi-Sport/Publications category to view all listed SI issues.

Going into his final fight, heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano boasted a perfect unbeaten-untied record of 48-0, prompting Sports Illustrated to feature him on its 9/19/55 cover for the first time in the magazine’s history. In case the “Brockton Blockbuster’s” mug wasn’t enough to make this issue a sellout, SI added the caption “Rocky the Champ, in This Issue How Archie Manning Plans to Beat Him”, in hopes of sparking debate over the 9/21/55 fight at Yankee Stadium. Marciano sent Moore back to the drawing board with a 9th round KO and retired undefeated with a record of 49-0. Score a classic boxing publication with this CGC graded (9.0) copy of SI’s 9/19/55 issue. This heavyweight edition’s lofty grade designation gives it a contending rank of “1/2” with three higher. Another contending rank cites this prime example as #83 on the list of "hardest to find” SI issues. Label notes include “v3, #12; White Pages; Rocky Marciano cover”.
